.....我還要祈禱 上帝賜給他充分的幽默感，那樣儘管他可能經常保持嚴肅，但不至於使他自己過於矜持；賜給他謙恭，使他能夠時刻記住真正偉大之單純質樸、真正智慧之兼容並蓄、真正力量之溫和謙沖....

                               General MacArthur’s Prayer for His son

     Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak; and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

     Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee－and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

     Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.  Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

     Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

     And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take him`self too seriously.  Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.

     Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain!”

 

  　　主啊！願你能讓我的兒子足夠堅強，能瞭解他自己什麼時候最為軟弱；讓他有足夠的勇氣，能在他恐懼時有以自持；讓他在光榮的失敗裏，發揮不屈不撓的精神，而在成功時，懂得謙虛與寬容。

願你能使我的兒子懂得實事求是，而不以空想代替行動，使他認識你－－同時知道：認識自己才是一切知識的基石。

我祈求你：不要讓他走上安逸舒適的道路，而讓他接受困難及挑戰的磨練和刺激。請讓他學習如何在風暴中屹立不搖，也讓他從中學習對於失敗者應如何的給予同情。

願我的兒子心地純正，志向高潔。使他懂得：要打算指揮別人，必須先學會管制自己。願他能將目光矚望於將來，但也永遠不忘記過去的經驗。

在他確能做到以上所說的一切後，我還要祈禱  上帝賜給他充分的幽默感，那樣儘管它可能經常保持嚴肅，但不至於使他自己過於矜持；賜給他謙恭，使他能夠時刻記住真正偉大之單純質樸、真正智慧之兼容並蓄、真正力量之溫和謙沖....... 

誠能如此，作為父親的我，才敢輕聲自語：「我總算沒有虛度此生。」
